CO-OP (Cooperative Education)

CO-OP, short for Cooperative Education, can be easily explained as an internship program that is integrated into a regular educational curriculum. Canadian higher education institutions are well-known for their strong industry connections and emphasis on practical learning. The CO-OP program, which can account for up to 50% of the total study duration, is highly popular among many students. It provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience by directly participating in internships and work placements as part of the academic curriculum.

Higher education institutions actively strive to offer CO-OP programs, enabling students to engage in practical work experience alongside their studies. Canadian education designs flexible academic programs and curriculums that align with industry needs through CO-OP placements, ensuring that students can adapt quickly to a rapidly changing society.

CO-OP programs involve students working for actual companies as part of their educational experience, and as a result, they receive compensation. It is not a separate application for the Study Permit and Work Permit. When applying for the Study Permit, the CO-OP program is included, and the Work Permit is also applied for simultaneously

In addition to the CO-OP program, international students with a valid study visa can also work part-time both on and off-campus. On-campus refers to jobs within the university or college, while off-campus means working outside the campus premises. However, there are several qualifications and conditions to be observed, so please make sure to thoroughly check the requirements.

It’s essential to be diligent in understanding the conditions related to working and your visa status. Treating any work casually as a simple part-time job under the student visa might lead to complications during visa extension or applying for work permits in the future. Therefore, always remember to carefully review the conditions and requirements regarding work and visa to avoid any potential issues

PGWPP(Post-Graduate Work Permit)

According to the research, approximately 60% of Canadian higher education institution graduates express their desire to stay and work in Canada through immigration.

As mentioned earlier, Canada’s inclusive immigration policy is one of the major factors attracting a large number of international students to the country. Among the various opportunities for international students, let’s introduce the Post-Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWPP).

The PGWPP allows international students who have graduated from a Canadian higher education institution to apply for a work permit after their studies. Unlike a regular work permit, which requires a job offer from an employer, the PGWPP enables students to apply for a work permit without a specific job offer. The duration of the PGWPP varies based on the length of the study program, and students who completed a two-year program can be eligible for up to three years of PGWPP. In essence, it provides international students with a grace period to seek employment opportunities within Canada.

However, it’s important to note that not all higher education institutions grant eligibility for the PGWPP. Some institutions may not qualify for this program. Therefore, students who intend to work in Canada after graduation should check in advance if their educational institution allows PGWPP applications. If PGWPP is not available, they can still apply for a work permit if they receive a job offer from an employer.
